For this blog post, I have identified five potential questions I might ask in an interview session. The purpose of these questions are to gain additional information that will allow me to make an informed decision about an opportunity. It is important to understand that an interview process is not only about being interviewed myself, but interviewing a potential employer as well. Taking the opportunity to ask questions that cannot be found online, is an important part of the interview process, and shows a higher level of interest on the part of a candidate.
What are some of the challenges facing your team, and for someone hired into this position?
This question helps me better understand the immediate temperature and culture of the team, and allows me to identify how my skills and experience may be of benefit to the organization. Additionally, it allows insight into the hiring managers engagement with the team, its direction, and path to success. Understanding the challenges of a particular team or position, provides a level of transparency into the opportunity, and minimizes any unexpected surprises.
Are there initiatives, projects, or responsibilities that you would like to see someone in this position take on, that are not already specific to this role?
This question provides me insight into immediate opportunities within the team where my skills can be of benefit. By asking this question, i am looking to see that the position will offer the level of challenge that I desire in an opportunity. This also allows me to better understand the vision of the hiring manager in regards to this particular team or position.
What advancement trajectory or opportunities would you like to see someone in this role pursue, and what does that path look like?
With this question, I am looking to better understand how the hiring manager might seek to develop a person in this role. This also gives me a greater global view of the position and how it interacts with other teams and roles within the company. Ultimately, this allows me to identify future opportunities within the team, as well as ways in which I can help further the career objectives of the hiring manager.
What are the target goals and objectives I could help you achieve in this role?
This question is targeted at the current activities of the organization, to understand the forward direction of the team. This question will help identify if the team is aggressive in achieving goals, if the goals seem achievable, and what type of performance metrics might be used to determine success. Ultimately, this question allows me to see the trajectory of the team, it’s performance expectations, and level of personal investment required.
What aspect of this team needs to be strengthened, and how best could this position help achieve that result?
This question allows me understand understand if the hiring manager is able to identify development opportunities that will benefit not only the team, but my own personal development within the position and team. By asking this question, I am looking to see that the hiring manager is aware of team performance, and opportunities for development. Understanding the answers to this question will help me identify that this team or opportunity poised for growth, development and longevity.
